Description
This is a very cool, rare bass that we recently acquired. We're always interested in items like this & love it when we can post one up for sale for everyone else to enjoy! Murphs were built by Pat Murphy in San Fernando, California in the mid to late 60's. He also built guitars & amps, but we haven't come across any of those yet. We're always looking though!
Cosmetic Condition: Ultra cool vintage vibe - various nicks, chips, dents & dings; surface scratches & weather checking. The original red finish has aged into more of a burnt orange with some really nice variegation. The previous owner had changed the neck plate from a 3-bolt to a 4-bolt. The bass comes with its original 3-bolt neck plate (which shows the serial number) so we changed it back, but we are including the 4-bolt anyway. Overall the bass has a great look to it with a gorgeous patina.
Neck: Super slender maple neck with some light flame figuring. Light rosewood fingerboard with cream dot inlays. Frets are in great shape with no wear. Oversize headstock with Murph logo on the truss rod cover. Double truss rods (like a Rickenbacker) in good working condition. Nickel Schaller tuners in perfect working condition. 1 9/16" nut width; 33 1/2" scale length.
Body: Offset, solid body with chrome tailpiece & fixed nickel bridge. Single-ply cream pickguard has no cracks. Bass weighs 7lbs 3.5oz.
Pickups: Original single coils with master volume & tone controls; 2-way selector switch. Both pots date to '65.
Playability / Sound: Slender neck makes the bass very easy to play & very comfortable, especially for guitarists. Sweet, rich tone with a bouncy feel to it.
Case: Unoriginal semi-hardshell case included.
