When Kay Musical Instruments entered the pedal market in the late '60s, their first units were a series of knobless, treadle-based plastic stompboxes. Though some considered these units odd and low-budget, many players came to love these pedals - particularly the Kay Fuzz Tone. The Fuzz Tone has since become a staple for artists like U2's The Edge, and now, JHS brings that classic pedal into the modern era with the Mary-K Fuzz.
Unlike the original, the Mary-K isn't a treadle-based pedal. Instead, it features VOLUME and FREQUENCY knobs that make it much easier to fine-tune your fuzz tone. These knobs act as expected and control the pedal's output level and the brightness/darkness of the fuzz effect. With these two controls alone, players can dial in everything from a bottom-heavy vintage fuzz to bright, snarling tones with plenty of bite.
Perhaps the coolest element of the Mary-K is its expression pedal output which allows players to control the FREQUENCY knob by connecting an expression pedal. Using this, players can change their fuzz sound on the fly, and the Mary-K behaves much more like the original Kay Fuzz Tone, a feature that'll put a smile on the faces of vintage purists.
