Common Questions about Ukuleles
Types of Ukuleles
Ukuleles are commonly available in four basic tonal ranges and sizes including: soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone.
Soprano/Standard Ukuleles
The Soprano, sometimes referred to as a standard ukulele, is the original and smallest type of uke. The soprano uke features a 13 inch neck and roughly a 20 inch total length. The soprano has a bright, classic ukulele tone.
Concert Ukuleles
The Second most popular type of ukulele is the concert uke. The primary difference between a soprano and concert is the 15 inch scale and 23 inch total length. Also, the concert has slightly deeper and louder sound than the smaller soprano ukulele.
Tenor Ukuleles
As one would expect the tenor uke has a deeper, more resonant sound from its 17 inch scale and larger 26 inch body length. One advantage of the tenor ukulele is that its larger scale can accommodate those with larger fingers.
Baritone Ukuleles
The Baritone Uke is an easy transition for a musician transitioning from a guitar, not only because of its large 19 inch scale and 30 inch total body length, but because unlike standard ukuleles the baritone is most commonly tuned like the top four strings of a guitar.
