Description
The all-new Habit from Chase Bliss is an extraordinary delay pedal with endless tricks up its sleeve. At its simplest, the Habit is an experimental delay that can be used to create rhythmic textures and cavernous echoes. At its most complex, it's a tool for composing entire self-contained songs. Whether you're seeking a straightforward delay or one of the most sonically advanced delay pedals ever created, the Habit is sure to satisfy.
With so much sonic versatility under the hood, it's essential to do a quick run-through of the parameters and controls.
Some users may want a more traditional delay experience - and the Habit excels at this. Just turn the Scan knob to the left, and it'll behave like a standard delay pedal. Using the LEVEL control, players can set the level of their delay. Crank it to the left for a completely dry sound, or max it out and flip the DRY KILL dip switch for a fully wet sound. The REPEATS knob controls the number of echoes produced, from small and subtle, to a stable, infinite build-up - like looping. Players can think of the SIZE control as the time knob on a typical delay pedal - it sets the space between echoes and does so cleanly, so there's no pitch warping as you turn the knob. The MODIFY control opens up various effects for sculpting your echoes, from causing playback errors to adding hi-pass and low-pass filters, and the 1, 2, 3, and A, Off, B switches engage the different effects. By turning up the SPREAD parameter, users can introduce a secondary echo that plays parts of the Habit's stored memory. Using these settings, players will have everything they need to create a near-infinite amount of top-notch delay sounds.
The SCAN knob was made for all the true tone-adventurers and sound-seekers out there. It's how users can interact with the Habit's memory, and it opens up a whole new realm of creative expression. It has two possible functions, depending on the MANUAL dip switch setting. In F SCAN AUTOMATIC mode, the Habit acts on an auto-scanning basis, automatically traveling through the memory and playing bits of old audio. Players can turn the SCAN knob to set how frequently it will auto-scan, and how far into the memory it will go. When set to MANUAL mode, users can choose which part of the memory is played. With the SCAN knob set to the left, the Habit will pull material from the present, and with the knob turned to the right, it'll recall sounds from further and further back.
With the controls explained, we have a few suggestions for players who want riff-ready sounds right out of the box. Select MOD B2 and flip the right-most switch to the 'IN' setting, and the Habit will create floating echo sounds with each repeat getting thinner and brighter, with the low frequencies melting away. Choose MOD A1 and select the 'OUT' setting, and you'll have a classic reverse delay at your disposal. Flip to MOD B1 and go to the 'IN' setting, and your signal will trail off into tumbling pitch echoes for odd, mind-bending counterpoint-esque sounds. While these settings could be toyed with for days of sonic experimentation, they barely scratch the surface of the Habit's true potential.
Complete with MIDI, CV, expression, and external tap compatibility, the Habit from Chase Bliss is undeniably one of the most advanced delay pedals ever created. Regardless of your delay needs, the Habit is more than capable of delivering the goods - and then some.
